Warm-up: Soft Hands Feed & Drop (10 min)
Player A feeds a gentle short ball to Player B's forehand front corner; B plays a soft touch drop back into the opposite front corner, focusing purely on racket-face control and wrist softness, not pace. Swap after ~90 seconds each side.
Drill details
Drill 1: Straight Drop from Length
- Setup
- 2 players, one feeder one hitter, drilling from the back corner. With a third player, rotate them in as a second feeder/retriever every 4 reps so the hitter faces continuous drop reps while feeders swap rest, and rotate the hitter role every 2 sets. With a fourth player, split into two pairs and run this drill on one half of the court while the other pair works Drill 2 on the other half, swapping patterns halfway through the block.
- Pattern
- Feeder drives a length ball into the hitter's back corner (a normal rail feed). Hitter reads the ball and, instead of driving it, plays a soft, disguised straight drop down the same wall into the front corner. Feeder retrieves and re-feeds. Run 8–10 reps forehand, then backhand, then swap roles.
- Coaching points
- Same racket prep as a drive — don't telegraph the drop early.
- Contact the ball out in front with an open racket face and soft wrist.
- Check the swing late, don't "stab" at it.
- Success criterion
- 7 of 10 drops land in the front quarter of the court within a racket-length of the side wall, without hitting the tin.
- Regression
- Feeder feeds from mid-court instead of full length, giving more time to prepare; widen target to the whole front third.
- Progression
- Feeder occasionally feeds a shorter, faster ball to force a quicker decision and disguise under time pressure.
- Duration
- 20 min.
- A feeds a length ball into B's back corner
- B plays a soft, disguised straight drop down the same wall
- B recovers to the T
Drill 2: Drop & Retrieve Combo
- Setup
- Same pair, live continuation. With a third player, rotate them in as a second feeder/retriever every 4 reps so the hitter faces continuous drop reps while feeders swap rest, and rotate the hitter role every 2 sets. With a fourth player, split into two pairs and run this drill on one half of the court while the other pair works Drill 1 on the other half, swapping patterns halfway through the block.
- Pattern
- Feeder feeds length as in Drill 1; hitter drops it short. Feeder must now run in and retrieve the drop (low, controlled pickup) and play it back straight or boast; hitter recovers to the T after their drop and must deal with whatever comes back — a live 2–3 shot pattern, not a dead feed-and-reset.
- Coaching points
- Hitter recovers to T immediately after dropping, racket up.
- Feeder retrieves with a low knee bend and controlled swing, not a rushed slap.
- Call "let" honestly given tight front-court proximity.
- Success criterion
- Rally sustains at least 3 shots (drop, retrieve, response) on 6 of 10 attempts without a tin or skip.
- Regression
- Feeder allowed to catch and hand-feed the drop instead of racket-retrieving it, to keep the pattern going while retrieval technique develops.
- Progression
- Hitter must alternate straight and cross-court drops, feeder must vary their response (straight length or boast) each time.
- Duration
- 20 min.
- A feeds length into B's back corner
- B drops it short down the same wall
- A runs in and retrieves the drop low
- A plays the retrieve back straight and deep
- B recovers to the T after the drop
Games details
Games 1: Drop or Die (conditioned, 15 min)
- Condition
- A rally can only be won by a shot landing in the front quarter of the court (a "kill") — anything else that would normally end a rally is a dead ball, replay.
- Scoring
- Straight games to 9, win by 2.
- Rotation
- 2 players: straight match. 3 players: winner stays, loser rotates. 4 players: pairs, swap partners every game.
- Duration
- 15 min.
Games 2: Open Play (normal, 15 min)
- Condition
- None — full rules.
- Scoring
- Games to 11, standard PAR scoring.
- Rotation
- Informal.
- Duration
- 15 min.
Court split
Written for 2 players on 1 court. The 3-player and 4-player adaptations live inline within each drill's Setup and within Games 1's rotation above — there's no separate parallel session structure for larger groups.
Coach's notes
- Watch for hitters using the same pace/swing shape as their drive right up until contact then breaking the wrist late — if the drop is telegraphed early it's not doing its job.
- Low-turnout: if only 2 players, run both drills exactly as written.
- A lunge for a dying drop is how good knees go bad — Turner & Rhodes Solicitors handle the aftermath.
